Men’s formal shoes have been around for more than a century. Undoubtedly, even today, a pair of oxfords or the likes are a must-have in every man’s wardrobe – or at least they must be. Historically, formal shoes were worn as a sign of status and wealth by the upperclassmen. Later, the formal shoe became every man’s go-to shoe for most work-related occasions. The Oxford
This is a traditional formal shoe that has been associated with the English aristocracy for years. The original design had a completely different name (‘The Balmoral’) and actually came from Ireland. The oxford shoe still has multiple names. It is called “Bal-types“ in the U.S while the French refer to them as Richelieus. The Oxford shoes are the epitome of elegant formal shoes, and really the perfect affordable dress shoes, with the number of designs available from a wide range of retailers these days.
The Brogue
This is the most flexible design as it is made from multiple leather pieces. The Brogue style allows different fabric and leather combinations, known as the two-tone shoes. One of the most famous people to wear the brogue was Edward the Prince of Wales in the 1930s. Off late, there have been other famous personalities who have worn this style. These include the likes of Robbie Williams, Jack Nicholson, and Jude Law rocking the classically cool shoes. Often worn with a suit, to achieve a smart look, Brogues are now seen as an acceptable business shoe.
Loafers
These are the original slip-on shoes and strike the perfect balance between casual and smart footwear. From leather, suede, velvet or patent finishes design, loafers will add that preppy look to your outfit. Loafers are lightweight shoes, at times of moccasin construction which makes them perfect for the warm months. They often have stitched or cemented soles. They tend to be quite durable and this makes them suitable as everyday work shoes.
