Tijo Thankachan: A Visionary Filmmaker’s Journey from Curiosity to Creativity
In the world of visual storytelling, few journeys are as inspiring as that of Tijo Thankachan—a filmmaker, editor, and founder of Miniwood Studios whose work transcends boundaries and captivates audiences. Born and raised in the serene town of Anchal, Kerala, Tijo’s story is one of relentless curiosity, creative passion, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.
The Childhood Story of Tijo Thankachan: A Journey of Curiosity and Discovery From a young boy fascinated by technology to a creative mind exploring endless possibilities, Tijo Thankachan’s childhood was filled with curiosity, exploration, and an unshakable passion for learning. His early years in Anchal, Kerala, were shaped by unexpected discoveries, a love for visuals, and a deep fascination with the technical world.
The First Encounter with Moving Images
Tijo’s earliest memories of being captivated by visuals came from a small black-and-white TV in a neighbor’s house, located below his home. As a child, he would spend time watching whatever played on the screen, mesmerized by the moving images.
A turning point came when his father returned from the Gulf with a JVC color television, introducing him to a new world of cinema, storytelling, and entertainment. This TV brought cable channels, which exposed him to a variety of films, shows, and music videos, shaping his deep interest in visual content.
Watching movies wasn’t just a pastime for Tijo—it was an experience that made him observe, question, and analyze how visuals were put together.
The Magic of the School Computer Lab (4th Grade)
Tijo’s first real encounter with technology happened in 4th grade, when he was introduced to computers in his school’s computer lab. The first program he explored was Windows Paint, where he would experiment with colors, shapes, and digital drawings.
For most kids, it was just a fun activity—but for Tijo, it was a whole new world of creativity. He would spend time clicking around, trying diFerent designs and patterns, unknowingly setting the foundation for his future passion for digital tools.
This first interaction with computers sparked a fascination that never faded.
The Gift That Changed Everything (7th Grade)
In 7th grade, Tijo’s father gifted the family a personal computer. While others in the house saw it as a device for games, Tijo saw it as a portal to creativity. He spent hours exploring the different software on the system. One of his most exciting discoveries was Windows Movie Maker—his first exposure to visual composition. Though he didn’t fully understand it at the time, he loved experimenting with photos and transitions, unknowingly taking his first steps toward digital storytelling.
Collecting Pictures and the Art of Editing
During this time, Tijo developed a habit of collecting pictures from Sathyan Anna’s photocopy shop, located near his home. He would scan, edit, and modify these images using the software available on his computer, slowly developing a sense of structure and creativity in visual design.
He didn’t just see images as still pictures—he saw possibilities. This hands-on approach helped him understand composition, adjustments, and the art of storytelling through Visuals.
The Fascination with an Electronics Shop
While technology fascinated Tijo, he was also deeply curious about the mechanical world. Sathyan Anna’s brother, Chandhran Annan, owned an electronics repair shop, where Tijo would spend hours watching him fix electrical devices.
The intricacies of circuits, the precision of repairs, and the patience required to restore broken devices fascinated him. He observed how things were dismantled, repaired, and put back together—an experience that taught him the importance of precision, problem-solving, and patience.
Exploring More, Learning More
By the time Tijo was in 10th grade, his passion for computers, visuals, and creativity had grown stronger. He installed PowerDirector software on his school’s computers to work on projects, continuing to sharpen his technical and creative skills. His childhood wasn’t just about watching and learning—it was about exploring, experimenting, and shaping his own understanding of technology and creativity.
Conclusion: A Childhood of Discovery
Tijo Thankachan’s childhood was filled with wonder, curiosity, and an eagerness to learn.
From his first experiences with television, to the school computer lab, to Sathyan Anna’s brother’s electronics shop, each moment shaped his understanding of creativity and technical precision.

thinker, and an innovator in the making.
